JACKIE CHAN’S EPIC MOVIE “DRAGON BLADE” – READY TO BLAZE THE TRAIL IN NIGERIAN CINEMAS

The theatrical rights to exhibit Dragon Blade, the latest film by the living legend, Jackie Chan, in cinemas across Nigeria from September 4th 2015 has been acquired by top notch Nigerian Distribution company, FilmOne.

Dragon Blade was a big hit in China and now Nigeria and other regions are set to achieve the same feat. The cinematographic splendor, sprawling battle scenes, unconvoluted story, memorable thrilling scenes, mind blowing stunts with pints of comic relief synonymous with the legend, makes Dragon Blade a movie worth seeing at the cinemas.

The movie takes us to the year 48 BC and Huo An (Jackie Chan), a Hun, serves as the captain of the Protection Squad Silk Road. A Roman general named Lucius (John Cusack) flees to the East with his legion and Publius (Jozef Waite), heir of the ruling Roman Consul, to escape from the corrupt Emperor Tiberius (Adrien Brody), who plans to kill Publius and usurp the throne. They meet Huo An at a frontier fort on the Silk Road, where they receive sanctuary. Tiberius and his army, who have pursued Lucius along the Silk Road, approach the fort with intention of killing Publius and ambitions of capturing and controlling the Silk Road. Huo An decides to help Lucius, and goes to his allies to recruit an army to fight against Tiberius. Huo An arrives with reinforcements, and an epic battle like never seen before, begins.

Dragon blade was directed by Daniel Lee and stars Jackie Chan, John Cusak (Golden Globe Winner), Adrien Brody (Academy Award Winner), Choi Si Won and Xiao Yang.

According to Mr Moses Babatope, COO of FilmOne “We are pleased to be the Distributor of this thrilling movie from the veteran, Jackie Chan. Certainly, he is a household name in Nigeria and indeed Africa, having achieved great things in his career. Now at sixty, when people think he should be slowing down, the contrary is the case, as he has proven once more that that age has nothing to do with reaching your set goals. We are proud to be associated with this film and the Jackie Chan brand and we’re confident that it will do well at the box office.”

Moses Babatope, Chief Operations Officer and EVP of FilmOne Distribution added, ‘We are absolutely delighted to be partnering with such a dynamic and successful Hollywood Studio who have already started 2016 on a remarkable note with box office hits like the academy award-winning ‘The Revenant’, animation franchise ‘Kung Fu Panda 3’ and recent comic book phenomenon ‘Deadpool’. We look forward to releasing franchise titles like ‘Independence Day: Resurgence’, ‘Ice Age: Collision Course’, potential franchise productions such as ‘Assassin’s Creed’ alongside films from Fox Searchlight and DreamWorks Animation. We will market these films with innovative and engaging campaigns.”

In the build up to its release, a shout out by Jackie Chan to Nigerians will soon be unveiled and those who troop to the cinemas to watch Dragon Blade will have the opportunity of winning fantastic prizes.

BENVENUTO CELLINI – THE LEGEND COMES TO FILMHOUSE CINEMAS

Sequel to the unveiling of the internationally renowned concept of Event Cinema in Nigeria by FilmOne Distribution via the successful screening of Peter Grimes, an extraordinary autobiographic tale of the legendary 16th century goldsmith and sculptor Benvenuto Cellini will hit all Filmhouse Cinemas from November 28th 2014.

This stunning visual extravaganza was shot in multi-camera HD, and performed by the world class English National Opera. Benvenuto Cellini is poised to create a unique cinematic experience for the viewing audience. Cellini is reputable for creating some of the celebrated works of his time such as the bronze figure of “Perseus holding the Head of Medusa and Ganymede on the Eagle”.

Benvenuto Cellini tells the story of Balducci, the papal exchequer, who is angry about the Pope’s decisio to make Benvenuto Cellini create a bronze statue of Perseus instead of Fieramoscad. His daughter Teresa is entranced with Cellini but he wants her to marry Fieramoscad. Before he leaves to answer a late summons to the Pope’s presence, he warns Teresa to be cautious of men’s attention, especially during the present carnival season. Teresa experiences conflicting emotions: duty to her father on the one hand, her love for Cellini on the other. It’s a tale of thwarted love, elopement, intrigue, disguise, mistaken identity, stringent deadlines by the pope with consequences amidst dazzling visual set pieces that makes Benvenuto Bellini a truly remarkable opera.

The International critics have given rave reviews about Benvenuto Cellini. The Daily Mail states “It’s a must see”, the Sunday Express terms it as ‘Extraordinary”, Daily Express hails it as “quite astounding” while the Evening Standard without mincing words states “ stunning and not to be missed”. The stellar cast is led by rising tenor Michael Spyres in the title role, with the stunning soprano Corinne Winters (who performed Violetta in last year’s acclaimed La traviata) as Cellini’s lover, Teresa.

The screening of Benvenuto Cellini has been made possible through the support of the British Council and Altive Media.

OFFICIAL PRESS STATEMENT FROM FILMONE DISTRIBUTION ABOUT HALF OF AYELLOW SUN NIGERIA CINEMA RELEASE

PRESS STATEMENT

Friday 20th
June 2014

May I use this opportunity to comment on the Statement below released to the press and general public on Thursday 19th, June 2014 by Caesar Kagho on behalf of the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), with respect to the classification process for the film ‘Half of a Yellow Sun’.

Firstly I would like to correct the information stated in several paragraphs of this statement that the NFVCB communicated to the exhibitor of the movie. The NFVCB does NOT relate nor communicate with an exhibitor with respect to film classification. It is the film’s distributor not an exhibitor that applies for classification and communicates with the Board on classification issues. FilmOne Distribution Limited is the distributor of HoaYS whilst Filmhouse Cinemas is a film exhibitor like others including Silverbird Cinemas and Genesis Deluxe Cinemas. This kind of misunderstanding of roles is why certain quarters of the industry claim that the Board does not understand the film industry.

The NFVCB wrote to Filmhouse Cinemas on the 27th of May (not to FilmOne) in response to several correspondence sent to it by FilmOne Distribution, requiring certain parts of certain scenes to be edited. Contrary to the impression given by the statement, FilmOne (not Filmhouse Cinemas) has been in communication with the Board in response. In addition, FilmOne spoke to the Board on the 17th of June and arranged a meeting for the 18th in Abuja. At this meeting (attended by the DG NFVCB, 3 NFVCB Directors/Heads including the writer of the NFVCB press statement, and the MD FilmOne) FilmOne broke down the financial consequence of making edits, re-mastering and re-printing of copies of the film and its resultant effect on the commercial viability of the film’s cinema release in Nigeria. Nevertheless, FilmOne presented to the Board edited scenes in accordance with the Board’s requirement. The Board watched these edited scenes and expressed their satisfaction with the edits. The Board then stated to the MD FilmOne that they would meet and communicate this officially.

It was then a surprise to FilmOne distribution to see a Press Statement released on the 19th of June (a day after this meeting) claiming that:
“It is note-worthy that since the correspondence from the Board to the Exhibitor, a response is yet to be received that may facilitate further regulatory actions as may be deemed necessary”
And
“Once the areas highlighted are resolved, the NFVCB as a regulator shall communicate a rating of the film as may be deemed appropriate”.

I would like to state that despite the additional costs associated with editing, re-mastering and re-printing, as at Wednesday 18th June, FilmOne in conjunction with the film producers, have satisfied this edit requirements by the NFVCB and are now looking forward to receiving an official classification from the Board. I am therefore at a loss as to the intention of the public statement released by NFVCB. We found this highly unnecessary and does not “set the records straight on the status of the movie”.

I am truly glad that the NFVCB is now satisfied with the effort we have made to meet the requirement they asked for. We now look forward to announcing a new release date for ‘Half of a Yellow Sun’.

Signed,
Kene Mkparu

PRESS RELEASE

REGULATORY AGENCY WRITES EXHIBITOR OF “HALF OF A YELLOW SUN”

It has become necessary for the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) to clear the air andset the records straight on the status of the movie, Half of a Yellow Sun and the attendant interest in certain quarters on the matter.

The NFVCB restates its position that the movie is NOT banned as speculated and that the Board has dutifully exercised due diligence consonant with section 36 (1) (b) of NFVCB Enabling Law ACT 1993, CAP N40 LFN 2004 which stipulates that “ a decision on a film shall ensure that such a film is not likely to undermine national security”.

The Board has duly communicated the exhibitor of the movie in a letter dated May 27th, 2014 explaining the status of the film and requiring the distributor to expunge/edit some clearly stated objectionable aspects of the movie.

Once the areas highlighted are resolved, the NFVCB as a regulator shall communicate a rating of the film as may be deemed appropriate.

The actions of the Board are a routine procedure that is not specific to any production but primarily taken within the ambit of the law, underpinned by the superior logic of safeguarding overall public interest.

It is note-worthy that since the correspondence from the Board to the Exhibitor, a response is yet to be received that may facilitate further regulatory actions as may be deemed necessary.

It would be recalled that the NFVCB as the movie industry regulator in Nigeria, approved 35 movies in the month of May 2014 alone, applying similar procedural processes.

Signed:
Caesar O. Kagho,
Acting Head, Corporate Affairs,
National Film & Video Censors Board.
